Kayaking Safety

Read Carefully

Always respect the ocean

Kayaking is a very peaceful and nature-friendly experience. But sometimes nature can be unpredictable and unforgiving. Please read our safety tips carefully before you take out the kayak for a spin.

The map above

Know your limits

In the map above there are two defined zones, the light green zone, and the dark green zone. If you are not an experienced kayaker, we advise you to stay in the light green zone. If you have some experience kayaking, and you are comfortable with a more physically requiring paddle, then you can also explore the dark green area.

Light green

Less exposed

In the light green zone, you will be less exposed to the strong winds. This means that you will have to work less hard to stay in control of where the kayak is heading.

Be aware that the wind usually is blowing from north-east to south-west. This means the wind will want to push you offshore into the dark green zone and towards the reefs outside.

The closer you stay to the shore, the less effect you will feel from the winds.

If you decide to stay in the light green zone go explore the Bucuti Mangroves.

Dark green

More exposed

In the dark green zone, you will be less MORE exposed to the strong winds. This means that you will have to work harder to stay in control of where the kayak is heading.

If you decide to go further into the dark green zone you can go look at the reefs outside.

When you go to cross the channel, please do so in a straight fashion. Do not hang around in the middle of the channel since here you have the most strong current. This current will push you southwest towards the airport and the reefs outside. By crossing the channel in a straight line, you will lessen the time you spend in the middle of the channel, this means you will be less impacted by the ocean current.
